About us

At Salcombe Brewery we take great passion in crafting award-winning beers using sustainable brewing methods mixed with the best locally sourced ingredients where possible. Bringing a quality as consistent as the Salcombe tides and a taste as refreshing as the sea air, our beers are about creating unique experiences and bringing the idyllic Salcombe way of life with every sip. Enjoying good times with friends and family and a taste of the Salcombe sunshine wherever you are.

But, not only do we want to produce great beer, we want to do it right. Supporting our people, our community and our local environment is at the core of everything we do.

Ethos

The surrounding coastal environment is hugely important to us - the Salcombe Estuary, just on our doorstep, is one of the few places in the UK you can find the rarer of the two species of seahorse. We've joined forces with the Seahorse Trust to raise funds to conserve them - for every bottle of our signature 'Seahorse' beer that is sold, we donate 5p to The Seahorse Trust.

Unique, fresh and contemporary, we've also incororated the seahorse into our branding as a seal of the high quality represented by our beers and our passion for protecting our coastal home.

Reducing our Impact

We are continually working across the business to find greener and more sustainable alternatives to reduce our impact on the environment. Our state of the art brewhouse is a unique concept built on the site of a decommissioned water reservoir which utilises the natural ambient temperature of the underground facility, for storing our beers at perfect conditioning temperature, eliminating the need for artificial cooling systens. The site also has its own borehole which is capable of supplying the brewery with its own source of pure Devonian water, again reducing excessive water use in the brewing process. We also recently eliminated all unncessary plastic from our packaging and we send our brewing waste to feed local pigs!

Quality as standard

We are proud to have been awarded SALSA plus beer accreditation - a reflection of the quality of our products and brewing processes.

The Brewhouse

Our award-winning, SALSA accredited brewery produces a range of premium cask ale and keg products. Nestled in the Devon countryside, overlooking the world famous Salcombe Estuary, our brewhouse is the core of our business and also houses our retail shop and tasting room. The brewhouse is a unique concept built on the site of a decommissioned water reservoir which utilises the natural ambient temperature of the underground facility, for storing our beers at perfect conditioning temperature. The site also has its own borehole which is capable of supplying the brewery with its own source of pure Devonian water.

Packaging

We have an additional site to house our own bottling, canning and kegging lines alongside packaging and fermenting capabilities. The packaging site also features our cask and keg storage together with our distribution activities. We recently elminated all unnecessary plastic from our packing and use FSC certified fully recyclable materials where possible.

Our story

A Passion for Great Beer!

We started brewing award winning beers back in September 2016. Our founders, John and Gerry Tiner moved to the area to pursue their dream of running the brewery, after 35 years of fun-filled family holidays near Salcombe. But the story doesn't start there……

Pursuing a dream

One day, while drinking a pint of his newly favourite local beer Shingle bay in a pub, the landlord told John it might be the last pint of Shingle Bay he'd ever enjoy, as the brewery was closing down. So, ever seeking a new adventure, John popped around to the brewery near Kingsbridge on a fact-finding mission. That same afternoon, without knowing a thing about brewing, he decided to buy the business in a bid to save Shingle Bay and to turn the business around. And so, the Salcombe Brewery story began.

Our home - Estuary View

In 2015, we moved it our new home, a former Water Board reservoir, perched on a hill overlooking the Salcombe-Kingsbridge estuary. We call it Estuary View. Once again, it was a chance purchase for John (he spotted the for sale sign one day while driving into Salcombe), but also a very clever one - the large semi-submerged concrete lined reservoir makes a fabulous eco-friendly cool storage area for our beer!

In 2021, we also opened an additional state of the art production facility nearby to support our growing business.

Partners
